What are the advantages of wood veneer?

What are the advantages of wood veneer?

The reasons for using wood veneer are numerous. First, using veneer is more cost-effective compared to solid wood of the same type. Second, a much wider selection of types of wood is available as veneer than as solid wood. In addition, wood veneer is more suitable for various scenarios in the design and execution of large projects.

Wood veneer is flexible and therefore very adaptable, because unlike solid wood, its substrate can also be easily adapted to fit rounded corners and surfaces. It is more environmentally friendly, because a much smaller amount of wood is needed to complete projects. For instance, an affordable and highly renewable type of wood can be used for a panel, while an exotic type of wood, which is not renewed as quickly, can be part of the veneer, using only a very small portion of the wood.

If you wish to make a high-quality wood product, you do not necessarily have to use only expensive wood. The effect of luxury and quality can also be achieved by a manufacturing process in which panels are made of inexpensive and quickly renewable wood, while at the same time surface layers are produced using expensive wood, which becomes veneer in the manufacturing process. Such a layer of veneer is applied to the panels during the project execution, creating a completely different material which exudes an air of luxury and high quality. Optimal use of expensive wood is another result of this process.

Veneer has been known to people since ancient times. It is an ideal solution both in terms of esthetics and preservation of forests.

Veneer is a natural and sustainable solution for woodwork, furniture, and decorations. Logs used for veneer manufacture are selected according to very strict requirements in terms of diameter and quality. In the production of veneer, logs are sliced into thin sheets. This waste-free process uses up all the material, which makes it environmentally sustainable.

The standard nominal thickness of Visa-Prom poplar veneer can range from 4 mm to 40 mm, the width of the boards (orthogonal to the wood grain) from 400 mm to 2500 mm, and the length (codirectional to the wood grain) from 900 mm to 2600 mm.

Each poplar tree is unique, meaning that each Visa-Prom poplar veneer has a different structure and thousands of variations. These differences highlight the very nature of the material used and give each completed project a unique and distinctive personality. Natural wood veneer is a natural product, so even though it is poplar veneer, samples manufactured and supplied by Visa-Prom may vary in color, structure and texture. Our veneer is made from a single species of wood – poplar. Like any other natural product, wood veneer may discolor due to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Therefore, we recommend the use of varnishes with UV protection.

Here is a brief description of the poplar veneer manufacturing process.

Expensive types of wood are an excellent raw material for furniture production, however, not everyone can afford such expensive products. Veneer was invented in order to preserve valuable types of wood and reduce the price of the final product. Today, this material is widely popular in the furniture industry. Veneer represents an identical replica of natural wood in terms of pattern, texture, and color.

First, the logs are cut horizontally into pieces of the desired length. Before the veneer is peeled, the raw material must be treated with steam to increase its plasticity.

Since poplar logs have a high water content, they do not require steam treatment before peeling.

The logs are then placed in the debarking machine where dirt and sand are removed along with the bark. The pieces are cut with a saw into blocks of a certain length. The log must first be rounded, and then the peeling process can begin. The veneer sheet that comes out of the peeling machine is placed on a conveyor belt which takes it to the veneer shears. The shears cut the veneer into layers of the required shape. The bundle of veneer cut by the shears is placed on the conveyor belt and transported to the kiln. Each set contains a specific design.

The color and pattern of the wood in each set must match. Therefore, the veneer layers made from individual boards in the planer are folded, dried and packed in bundles in exactly the same order in which they come out of the planer. We dry our products in two types of kilns, multi-level and hot air, and then sort them into bundles by grade.

Defective layers can be glued together. If there are knots on the veneer layers, they are sent to the varnishing machine, where the defects are removed, and then they are decorated with veneer inlays.

Visa-Prom is committed to promoting sustainable forest management, combining customer satisfaction with environmental protection.

All of our veneers are made of wood sourced from environmentally responsible suppliers. Our poplar veneers are made from sustainably harvested wood (our poplar veneer suppliers must provide us with a Sustainable Forest Management Permit and Sustainable Forest Management Plan).

Our imported wood is harvested in accordance with strict environmental guidelines and verified through our supplier program to ensure that it has been legally harvested and independently certified as wood from responsibly managed forests in accordance with a forest management plan. Suppliers must also possess chain-of-custody certification, which confirms the integrity of the supply chain from forest to market.
